Fatty Liver Reason
Share
Fatty liver — also known as hepatic steatosis — occurs when too much fat builds up in liver cells. There are two main types:
-
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) – not related to alcohol
-
Alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD) – caused by heavy alcohol use
⚠️ Common Causes of Fatty Liver
🥤 1. Poor Diet / Overnutrition
-
High intake of sugary foods, refined carbs (white bread, pasta), and trans fats
-
Overeating leads to fat accumulation in the liver
⚖️ 2. Obesity
-
Strongly linked to fatty liver, especially abdominal (belly) fat
-
Increases insulin resistance, which promotes fat storage in the liver
🍺 3. Alcohol Consumption
-
Excess alcohol stresses liver cells and leads to fat buildup (AFLD)
🧬 4. Insulin Resistance / Type 2 Diabetes
-
Causes more fat to be stored in liver cells
-
Common in people with metabolic syndrome
🩸 5. High Cholesterol / Triglycerides
-
Imbalanced blood fats contribute to liver fat storage
🧪 6. Medications and Toxins
-
Some drugs (e.g. steroids, methotrexate, tamoxifen) can cause fatty liver
🛌 7. Sedentary Lifestyle
-
Lack of exercise promotes weight gain and metabolic dysfunction
⚖️ 8. Rapid Weight Loss / Malnutrition
-
Can also paradoxically cause fatty liver due to stress on metabolism
Less Common Causes
-
Genetics (family history)
-
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
-
Sleep apnea
-
Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
✅ Prevention & Reversal
-
Lose weight gradually (5–10% of body weight can reverse NAFLD)
-
Exercise regularly (aerobic + resistance training)
-
Eat a liver-friendly diet (Mediterranean, low-carb, low-sugar)
-
Limit alcohol
-
Manage diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure
